There are bucket-list dives, and then there is the Wall of Sharks at the Tumakohua Pass — an encounter so visceral, so otherworldly, that seasoned divers struggle to describe it without their voice going quiet. Our Expedition places you at the epicenter of it all, staying directly at the only lodge sitting right at the mouth of the south pass.

Step off your bungalow, kit up, and within minutes you're drifting into one of the most pristine marine ecosystems on the planet. No hour-long boat rides from a distant resort. No competing for space with other dive groups. Just you, your Apex team, and a living curtain of grey reef sharks stretching across the coral channel as far as your eye can see.

The dive that defines this expedition
On the incoming tide, the dive boat drops you just outside the pass entrance on the ocean side. You descend to around 25 meters and let the current do the work — a long, silky drift along the reef wall as wrasses, Napoleonfish, barracuda, and schools of jacks part around you. Then you round the corner into the pass itself, and the wall appears.

Hundreds of grey reef sharks — regularly numbering over 500 — hold station in the channel, a living architecture of fins and muscle stacked from the sandy floor to the mid-water column. They are not agitated. They are not fleeing. They are simply there, in a density that scrambles every reference point you thought you had for what a shark encounter looks like. The visibility routinely exceeds 30 meters in crystal-clear, 26–28°C water.

At 28 meters, tucked into the right flank of the pass, the Napoleonic Cave offers a quieter drama — a resting ground for whitetip reef sharks that barely stir as you peer in. As your air winds down, the current carries you home, finishing your dive right in front of the resort's overwater restaurant. It's one of the few dive sites on Earth where your exit point is a cocktail deck at sunset.

Logistics:
We will fly into Tahiti (PPT) and take a quick domestic flight to (FAV). There will be a 1.5 hour boat transfer down to the resort after landing.

Tetamanu Village is a remote eco-resort located on the southern pass of Fakarava. They are the only operator in the area, which means divers have the opportunity to dive the wall of sharks more than twice per day. The food, accommodations, and rental gear is all inclusive. The bungalows are basic and amenities limited, but the diving is exceptional. There is a beautiful house reef to snorkel in between dives. There are also included land tours nearby to secluded pink beaches. One of the top shark dives in the world!
