Join us for a week in the South Pacific to snorkel with gentle giants, humpback whales! Every August-October these southern humpback whales migrate from the cold waters of Antarctica to the warmer waters of French Polynesia. The whales come here to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. This gives us a unique opportunity to get in the water with them and experience incredible interactions. We can encounter mothers with their babies, male singers, juveniles, a groups of humpbacks all together! There are also plenty of other species around including pilot whales, rough tooth dolphins, spinner dolphins, oceanic white tip sharks, and other types of whales.

We will fly into Tahiti (PPT) and take a quick ferry over to the Island of Mo’orea and enjoy one of the most beautiful islands in the world. This trip will also provide guests the unique opportunity to learn about the science and conservation behind the whale population that visits French Polynesia every year. We will have a special guest presentation- renowned scientist Dr. Michael Poole. Dr. Poole is responsible for conducting the research that led to the protection laws that currently exist for the whales in French Polynesia. He has also studied other dolphin and whale species in the area. He will educate all our guests on the history and current status of the humpbacks, and teach everyone how to safely interact with the animals.

Everyone who joins must bring their own snorkel gear as there are not many rental options on the island. All guests must be strong swimmers that are comfortable with open ocean snorkeling as well.

Join the Apex Ocean Travel family and embark on an epic adventure to swim alongside intelligent and curious cetaceans.

Conservation/Science:
Every booking directly supports protecting land on Mo’orea to keep it wild. Through our operator, Wildma Expeditions, we are helping purchase land on the island to prevent it from being developed. Each booking protects 1 square meter of land. By adopting one square meter of land, it helps create a sanctuary. It’s a small piece of land, but it means the world. Read more about the program here:
https://keepmooreawild.org/

We will also have a guest scientist on this trip who was vital in the creation of the marine protected area in French Polynesia. He has been studying the whales here for decades, and he will be sharing his knowledge with us!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning your perfect adventure. Can’t find the answer? Our travel experts are here to help.

Guests will fly into Tahiti (PPT) International Airport, and then take a ferry to Moorea. The ferry terminal is only 15 minutes from the airport.
This trip is snorkeling only, no scuba diving certification is required. Guests must be strong swimmers comfortable with open ocean conditions. However, there is an option to do shark dives in Fakarava as an add-on. Please reach out to us if interested in doing the scuba diving with wall of sharks.
Mo’orea has plenty of land activities including waterfall hikes, pineapple field tours, coral conservation tours, and turtle sanctuary tours.
This time of year is winter for French Polynesia. The weather is generally still sunny hot during the day (~80F/26C). If there is rain or wind, it can be cooler on the boat. All guests should bring warm, water repellant clothing for the boat.
The whales are protected from boats in Mo’orea, so each boat must drop their guests 100m from the whales. This means divers will be doing a lot of swimming. Sometimes the encounters are easy, but guests must be prepared to swim for extended periods of time. Guests should also be comfortable being out on a boat for long periods of time. There is no rush in the water, as we prioritize slow approaches and let the whales control the encounters.
Guests should bring all their snorkel or freediving gear – mask, snorkel, fins, socks, wetsuit/rash guard. Longer freediving fins are recommended, but not necessary. It is recommended to bring as much gear as possible in your carry on bag, especially if your flight has transfers. Please email us for our full packing list.

Our trips are intentionally small and intimate, capped at just five guests for humpback whale expeditions. This ensures a more authentic, meaningful time in the water, while staying within the local regulations. 6 divers + local guide will be able to be in the water at the same time with humpbacks

Every meeting with these gentle giants is different. Sometimes they approach curiously; other times, they linger at a distance. Whatever the moment brings, our priority is a respectful, safe interaction — always on the whales’ terms — that leaves you in awe of their presence. We do not cut off the whale or chase them.
Definitely! Photography is welcome and encouraged. Just remember to take some time to be fully present too, as you will have a professional photographer taking photos and videos for you.
This expedition does require patience. Sometimes we wait for hours for a magical encounter to happen. We also look offshore for other species.
Arrive open-minded and ready for adventure. You’ll spend several hours each day on the water, so general fitness and comfort at sea are important. Bring high energy on the boat and the ocean may return it to us.
Yes due to new regulations, we are required to wear floatation (wetsuits) in the water. 3mm tops are suggested.
